My 2016 A4/A3+ photo printers buying guide...

R3000 EpsonIt is sometimes expected from a specialist or at least a professional to give a definite opinion on his choices. It is often what you're asking me for. Well don't expect me to choose for you in this page because it seems quite complicated to me: yes, we're lucky enough to have a broad choice between these two printers brands that are Canon and Epson (in alphabetical order!).
However, I am going to do my "job" by selecting in their respective range the printers that seem most adapted to a photo use...

1 - Photo printers under $150.00...

2 - Photo printers under $500.00...

3 - Printers over $600.00

Big format printers (A2 and over)

1 - Photo printers under $150.00...

No pigment-based printers in this price range but already a very good printing accuracy!

I thus chose two multifunctional printers that favored photo printing quality, paradoxically, to the detriment of office printing quality! We're still not entering the world of "real" photo quality here though.

Pointilles

Canon MG7120

Canon MG7520/7550

I didn't try it but very clearly, it is the one I would choose (with the Epson model below) if I were to choose a printer for less than $200. Excellent value for money.

High versatility !

Technical specifications of the Canon MG7520/7550

Max. format: A4
Number of cartridges:
6, coloring-agents based inks among which two grey ones
Printing definition: 9,600 x 2,400 ppp

My opinion about this printer

At that price, you won't get a real photo printer but a versatile printer printing photos rather better than others, with especially a great printing definition.

Epson XP-620

Epson XP-620 - New !

I didn't try it either but I would probably hesitate between this one and the Canon one above if I had to choose a printer for less than $300.

Excellent value for money as well.

Max. format: A4
Number of cartridges:
6, coloring-agents-based Claria ink
Printing definition: 5,760 x 1,440 ppp

My opinion about this printer

I think that, among all brands, it's the first price to have access to photo quality with a printer under $150. Remember to choose a good paper and calibrate!

2 - Photo printers under $450...

Here, we set foot into the world of very good quality of photo printing because these are printers that are clearly optimized to get quality photo prints... But still no pigment-based ink for this price...

I chose two photo printers that can print in A3+ format this time, with more ink cartridges for a rendering with more relief but still with coloring agents-based ink.

Pointilles

Canon Pro 100 printer

Canon Pixma Pro-100S

Compared to the printers listed above, the main improvements are a bigger printing format and four additional cartridges that make the difference.

Good value for money

Technical specifications of the Canon Pro-100S

Max. format: A4
Number of cartridges:
10, with coloring agents though, among which two grey ones for more finely-shaded black & white prints;
Printing definition: 4,800 x 2,400 ppp

My opinion about this printer

You have to ask yourslef the question of the life expectancy of your prints. If you want to sell them, you'll have to choose the superior quality, with pigment-based ink, but otherwise, you won't see the difference since the quality is already excellent here.

Epson Stylus Photo 1500W printer

Compared to the other printers above, this one offers a bigger printing format and four additional ink cartridges that make a real difference.

It is the first model of photo quality printer in A3+ format by Epson, at a reasonable cost. Remember to choose a nice paper and calibrate!

Pointilles

Canon Pro 10 printer

Canon Pixma Pro-10

It is the same printer as the Pro 100 model but with pigment-based ink this time.

That's the sum you'll have to invest to get pigment-based printing by Canon.

Technical specifications of the Canon Pro-10

Max. format: A3+
Number of cartridges:
10 pigment-based ink cartridges, among which several grey and black inks for black & white prints,
Transparent ink Chroma Optimizer to cover white zones with the same reflection,
High-capacity cartridges,
Printing definition: 4800 x 2400 ppp
Wide gamut.

My opinion about this printer

We're really in front of a great printing quality with the possibility to sell your prints since the inks are pigment-based.

3 - Photo printers over $600...

Finally, we're entering the world of best printing quality, with a good printing size moreover (A3+) since it is now pigment-based ink...

I picked three photo printers that gather all technical improvements: printing thinness, number of cartridges and ink quality... and a lot more.

My purchasing advice

Printing thinness is here for both brands, CANON and EPSON, wide gamuts as well so I would choose:

EPSON for its roll paper print (panoramic photography) and EPSON's "experience" of more than ten years;
CANON for its ink Chroma Optimizer that is supposed to splatter transparent ink even in the white parts of the photo, where there could be differences of reflections with the other zones of the print.

Anyway, both products are excellent...

Pointilles

Canon Pro 1 printer

Canon Pixma Pro-1

In comparison to other printers listed above, the printing size is bigger and two cartridges have been added.

This website is almost entirely free and yet almost free of ads. Why? Because they look so bad! It is lucrative though, and enables many websites to keep on living. So I asked myself: what can I do? To keep on developing this website, I'm going to need a regular income just like everyone else. How can I keep on giving access to free information like I've been doing since April 2002?

And I finally found the answer: affiliation. Every time you click on a link from this site to one of my partners' shops, they know you've been referred by me and give me a small percentage on your purchase, be it something I recommend on my website or anything else. Remember to use my links when you shop on these sites! It doesn't cost you anything and it's a win-win deal – for me, them, and you!
